Dead Air is a case featured in Criminal Case as the twenty-fifth case of Zombie Homeland and the fifth and final case in the Medulla Mile district of The Walled City of Seattle.
Plot[]
After businessman Topher Briggs had headed out on his mission to stop the criminal thief, the player and Livia hurried to Medulla Mile Park following Izabela's reveals of screams being heard in the park. There, they didn't find Topher, but instead they found blood splatters and the head of station director Johnny Frost left in the park. They then found clues to suspect and question makeup artist Scarlett Kiyoko, news reporter Victoria Emerson, investigative journalist Jax Garrett and car collector Andrew Wellington in the murder. Ravi then revealed that Johnny's head was ripped off his shoulders by a weapon of some sort before Livia, with the sleazy reporter's brain, and the player recapped the case. They were then informed by Vampire Steve that Topher had gotten in touch with them, and that he had found where the killer left Johnny's body.
The detectives then headed to BriggsCorp after they they learned from Steve about Topher's instructions. They then discovered the decapitated body of their victim, dumped in the corporation's headquarters lobby, before they then found Topher bruised and stained with his own blood that came from a wound across his chest. They then added Topher to the suspect roster before they then found out that their laboratory chief Olivier Quinton had visited the company, believing that there was a mole in the corporation, adding him and rich Bueller heir Toby Bueller to the roster of suspects in the murder. Soon after, they found out that Johnny had flirted with Victoria, which angered Scarlett, and that Andrew and Johnny had stopped being friends after Johnny accidentally totaled Andrew's car for a publicity stunt. Soon after, they were informed by Natalie, who told them that their troublesome reporter had caused trouble again, as she revealed that Jax was doing a broadcast on the scandals surrounding BriggsCorp.
They then confronted Jax about the broadcast he was doing, before Steve was able to shut down the broadcast, leaving Jax on dead air. Jax then admitted that he saw a chance due to the body being found at BriggsCorp, and that Johnny wasn't there to stop him. Jax then admitted that Johnny was too self-centered and egoistical before the detectives then reinvestigated the BriggsCorp headquarters, where they found out Olivier was investigating the company with Johnny after Katrina Briggs's death. They also learned that Toby was angry at Johnny when the news reporter discovered a scandal of his cousins' incestuous relationship and that Topher got annoyed at Johnny due to his constant snooping. In the end, the detectives found the bloodstained murder weapon left in a case at the news station and incriminated Johnny's killer to be Topher Briggs.
They then confronted Topher in his office, who then sighed and told them that he had indeed killed Johnny, and it was because he didn't have a choice. He then told them that Johnny was about to destroy his plans by exposing him, and he then confessed that he had been behind the robberies, having hired a neglected mechanic to help him commit the robberies. Topher then told them that with the robberies, he hoped that businesses would plummet in profits, and he could purchase them for his own. He then told them that the plan was concocted after he heard that SeattleHealth CEO Jackson Potter was working on a cure for the zombie virus, saying that he was forever dedicated to the trade and the economy. He then told them that with as much businesses he had, and once the zombie virus was erased by the cure, people would want to find more jobs in Seattle, and he would give the businesses away for huge profits, so he could retire in a peacefully posh life. He then told them that Johnny had found out just hours before the murder, due to his snooping after his wife's death, and that he wanted Johnny to stop from going to expose him. He then asked Johnny to meet him at the park, where he went into full on zombie mode, and tore the news station director's head off his shoulders. He then confessed that he had attempted to disguise the murder as a chainsaw murder by splattering a chainsaw with Johnny's blood and then wounding himself with the same weapon before leaving it in the news station to deflect suspicion. He then told them that he wasn't going to escape now, knowing he had to now face the punishment for his crimes now that he was caught. However, as Livia arrested Topher, the company's power then shut down, before a computer screen in Topher's office was emblazoned with the words, "Mr Berserk".
After the cyber attack on BriggsCorp, Livia and the player managed to get Topher out of the headquarters safely, before they then took him back to the police station. The duo then questioned him on Mr Berserk, and the CEO told them that he didn't know who the person was. After Livia asked him if he was lying, the businessman then told them that with his master scheme exposed, he had nothing left to lose, before telling them to look into his company's database as he handed them his passcard. The player and Livia then investigated the BriggsCorp headquarters, where they found a tablet that would allow them to access the database. They then unlocked the tablet with Topher's card and the password, before they sent the hacked tablet to Vampire Steve. Steve then revealed to the detectives that the hacker's actions was not like anything he had seen, saying that Mr Berserk was one of the most unique hackers he had seen. He also revealed that despite the hacks, he was able to retrieve all information on the businesses purchased by BriggsCorp. They then questioned Topher about the mysterious hacker, and Topher told them that he wasn't sure who would be behind the aliases, but he had dealt with his share of hackers before, telling them that they often originated from the technology capital of the Walled City, Lobe Lake.
Meanwhile, the player and Nick interrogated Yasmine in prison about her criminal robberies done under Topher's influence. Yasmine then reluctantly confessed that, due to her sentence being upped to a life sentence, her confession for the murder of car salesman Bryce Pryce was falsified so the team would not find out about her affiliations with Topher. She then confessed that Bryce had discovered that she had stolen his wife's priceless diamond from his safe, and that he was going to go to the police. She then told them that she kept all of her stolen goods in a bunker that was concealed in Medulla Mile Park. Nick and the player, along with Olivier who wanted to help, then headed to Medulla Mile Park, where they then discovered a bunker hatch door, concealed by some bushes. After the player was able to unlock the bunker, they then asked Olivier and Xavier to inventory the contents of the bunker, the duo successfully confirming that all the stolen goods were there. Olivier and the player then decided to return the diamond to lawyer Josephine Pryce, before they then asked Josephine to help them return the stolen items back to their owners, the lawyer agreeing as she thanked Olivier and the player with a smile on her face.
After all the events, Olivier told them that he had an idea about what to do with the businesses, saying that the businesses could be returned to their respective owners, so Medulla Mile could return to its prosperity without needing a big corporation's influence. With BriggsCorp down for the count, Olivier and the player then suggested to CEO of SeattleHealth Jackson Potter that he help Medulla Mile return to its prosperous economical growth by taking all the businesses, returning them and using the BriggsCorp funding to put it toward finding a cure for the zombie virus. Soon after, the team attended Topher's trial, hosted by Judge Michalka, where the businessman confessed guilty of all his crimes that the team had uncovered. Judge Michalka then told him that in the end, Topher had to pay the price, before she then sentenced him to a lifetime sentence in the freezer, until the end of time. Jax then came to the detectives after the trial, thanking the detectives for uncovering Johnny's killer, and that he would take Johnny's place with pride. After all the events, Chief Babineaux then told them that they had to find out who was Mr Berserk and what plans they had now that BriggsCorp was shut down. With the knowledge they had, the chief then told them that they would be heading to Lobe Lake the following week to find out more about the hacker.
